Happiness Is Pets is a pet shop in Illinois that sells dogs from puppy mills.  Happiness Is Pets sold 3486 puppies in 2016. They have 5 locations; Lombard, Downers Grove, Arlington Heights, Orland Park and Naperville. The busiest location is Orland Park.

This chain is the largest supplier of puppy mill dogs in Illinois. It's horrible that this is allowed to go on and on and on..... Chicago Animal Care & Control put down 2451 dogs in 2016. That figure is just from one kill shelter in Illinois. There are many more. I wonder how many dogs that were purchased at HIP landed in a shelter?

We have been protesting this pet shop for over 9 years and we know our protests, outreach, etc. is working. In 2008 this chain sold over 5000 puppies and as you can see, the numbers have gone down. It's not enough though, we need to keep it up. Especially now when people are focusing on other issues with our country, we can't forget about the breeding dogs stuck in puppy mills.

In 2012 there was a class action lawsuit against this place with our help. It did end up settling last year, and it looks like they are covering all bases now. We recently had a consumer tell us they had to sign an agreement before purchasing the puppy that they would not participate in a class action lawsuit, should one be forthcoming. Hmmm......does that tell you anything? They are so worried about the "product" they sell, you have to agree not to sue should that "product" get sick or die.

We also had the unfortunate consumer purchase a dog in October 2016 from the Arlington Heights location and it died a few months later. The breeder was Davis & Mary Harris, Hawk Ridge Kennels in Portland Missouri.

The towns that support Happiness Is Pets will not go humane. We have tried time and again, but they will only pass disclosure ordinances which helps nobody but the pet shop. And now the USDA has taken down all inspection reports, so even if someone did the proper research, they could not get the information they need. The towns let this pet shop use unlicensed breeders which they call "hobby breeders" and they also use licensed puppy mills. I don't know which one is worse, the "hobby breeder" with no oversight at all, or the inhumane legal puppy mill.
